In the + views an ex shows when you had children together, so a child's parent is never missing. An ex you didn't have children with stays out of the way, to keep things tidy. They're still on the tree and in search, and their card still records the relationship. For example, if your brother and his ex have a son, she shows beside him even though they've split up; his first girlfriend, with no children together, doesn't. Each ex can also be shown or hidden one by one in Edit.
