Coming soon: yes, if the tree's owner has switched Promises on – some families love them, some don't, so it's the owner's choice. A promise is just between you and the owner: only the two of you ever see it, and you sort the money out together. For example, say Grandma promises Grandad George £5 towards the tree – no one on the tree sees it but the two of them, and it isn't added to the family's running total.
